Celebrating the Release of Herdwick: A Portrait of Lakeland Vol. 2 and From the Land: The Outer Hebrides
We’re thrilled to announce the launch of two stunning new photographic books by celebrated photographer Ian Lawson: Herdwick: A Portrait of Lakeland Vol. 2 and From the Land: The Outer Hebrides. These books, available now at www.ianlawson.com, are a continuation of Ian’s breathtaking visual storytelling, capturing the beauty, culture, and landscapes of two of Britain’s most iconic regions—the Lake District and the Outer Hebrides.
Both works celebrate Ian Lawson’s deep connection with the land and its people. Through his lens, he captures not only the rugged landscapes but also the intricate relationships between the land, its history, and its inhabitants.
Herdwick: A Portrait of Lakeland Vol. 2
In Herdwick: A Portrait of Lakeland Vol. 2, Ian returns to the fells of the Lake District, following up on the success of his first volume. This new edition takes readers deeper into the life and heritage of the iconic Herdwick sheep and the timeless beauty of Lakeland. Through his breathtaking photography, Ian offers a rare glimpse into the lives of the shepherds and their flocks, celebrating the perseverance and harmony between nature and community.
The Herdwick sheep have long been symbolic of the Lake District, and this volume brings their story into sharp focus. Expect lush, sweeping landscapes, intimate portraits of the shepherds, and touching scenes of these hardy animals against the rugged Lakeland backdrop.
From the Land: The Outer Hebrides
In From the Land: The Outer Hebrides, Ian transports us to one of the most remote and atmospheric regions of Scotland. The Outer Hebrides are known for their wild beauty and rich cultural history, and Ian’s photography brings both to life with an unparalleled sense of place.
The book is a visual journey across the islands, where the land, sea, and sky form a dramatic tableau. Ian captures the untamed beauty of the Hebrides, from the windswept beaches and ancient stone structures to the everyday life of the crofters who call this place home. It’s a testament to the resilience and spirit of the people who have lived and worked in this remote landscape for generations.
The Art of the Book: Design, Typography, and Collaboration
While the photography in these two volumes is undoubtedly the star, there’s more than meets the eye in bringing such exquisite work to life. I had the pleasure of collaborating with Ian on these books, working on the design, artwork, and typography to ensure that every page does justice to the stunning visuals.
Designing these books was a journey in itself—much like Ian’s photographic adventures. The goal was to craft layouts and typography that punctuated the landscapes captured in each book. Whether it’s the earthy, grounded feel of Herdwick: A Portrait of Lakeland Vol. 2 or the stark, windswept minimalism of From the Land: The Outer Hebrides, the design complements Ian’s work, allowing the photography and the reader space to breathe while providing a cohesive narrative structure.
Typography played a crucial role in the storytelling, offering a visual rhythm that mirrors the landscapes. From selecting minimalist fonts that would not compete with the imagery to creating clean, elegant layouts that let the photography shine, every design choice was made to enhance the reader's journey through Ian’s imagery.
Working with Ian has been a deeply fulfilling experience, as we both share a passion for storytelling through visual art. My role was to ensure that the books themselves became works of art, much like the images they contain. Through careful consideration of spacing, composition, and typography, we’ve created books that don’t just tell a story but invite you into the heart of these breathtaking landscapes.
